Tsavo West National Park is located in southern Kenya and covers around 9,000 square kilometers. It borders directly onto Tsavo East but differs significantly due to its varied terrain. Here, hilly landscapes alternate with dense bushland, lava fields, lush oases and lakes. A particular highlight is the Mzima Springs – crystal-clear natural springs that produce pure water and are home to hippos, crocodiles and countless fish.

In addition to fascinating geological formations such as the Chyulu Hills or the Shetani Lava Flow, Tsavo West captivates visitors with impressive biodiversity. The scenery often feels wilder and more mysterious than the open expanses of Tsavo East. Mist-shrouded hills, sudden viewpoints and hidden waterholes lend the park an almost mystical atmosphere.

Animals in Tsavo West National Park

Tsavo West is known for its impressive diversity of wildlife. It’s home to elephants, buffaloes, lions, leopards, cheetahs, zebras, giraffes, kudus and many species of antelope. Particularly impressive are the hippos and crocodiles in the Mzima Springs, which can even be observed through underwater viewing windows.

The park is also a paradise for bird watchers – over 600 species have been recorded here, including kingfishers, hornbills, eagles and many water birds.

Because of the hilly terrain and dense vegetation, wildlife spotting here can be more challenging and adventurous than in the open Tsavo East – making every safari a true adventure.
